How to remove/mask fish odor?

Written by admin on July 24, 2009 – 12:48 pm -

I live in an apartment, and eat a lot of fish. When you leave for a little bit and come back in, its very obvious that the whole place has the eu de fish thing goin on. Its kinda embarassing, every time I have a guest over I have to qualify the odor by saying "yea, I eat a lot of fish." Still, its kind of awkward. Anyhow, are there any good deodorizers/air freshners out there that can mask or eliminate the stink? I mean its not overpowering, but like I said, there is the definite fish undertone that smacks you in the face as you walk in.

FYI, I have used sprays (febreez, etc) and they work to a certain extent, but I’m more looking for something that I can plug in/leave in a corner.

Thanks.

When we have fish fry’s at the fire station, afterwords we take a very tiny bit of cinnamon and sprinkle it on the stove burner. Then we turn the burner on LOW and let it sit for a few seconds, someone always stands there and watches. Then turn the burner off and allow to cool, wipe with a damp cloth and your house will smell like you’ve been baking all day!!

I’m not sure if the plug in air fresheners will be strong enough.

It is the oil from the fish that is causing the odor. It will collect on surfaces that are porous, like wood, upholstery, window treatments and carpet. You can place bowls of vinegar, borax or baking soda around your home to absorb the odor from the air, but I would treat the porous surfaces with oust, zero odor, Lysol Fabric Refresher etc. to remove residual odor. Oust does make a little plug in that you could use for continual protection.

Damn, that’s alot of fish. Check with your local seafood supplier, they use a odorizer, it only takes a little to neutralize the odor. I can’t recall the name of it, but you put a small cap of it in the corner of a room and it removes all the odors. Perhaps the seafood supplier will sell you a little or purchase a bottle of it wholesale for you.

Have you tried spraying water and vinegar around the house? It works better than fabreeze.I bought me a infussion set yesterday for my bedroom, lavendar and it is strong by nice smelling. You get them at Walmart for 9.99.give it a try.You could put a shallow bowl with plain vinegar on a high shelf to get rid of it too.It takes cigarette odors out so it works…

i bought a diffuser and then went to the body shop and bought their scented oils for the home about 8.00/per bottle. then i just light candles in the bottom part of the diffuser and add about 10 drops of scent and the rest water and it makes my house smell heavenly. i smoke in my house and i have two big dogs that sleep in the livingroom at night and everyone who has walked through my door can’t believe that the dogs and a smoker live here.

I use the plug ins too but I read that they can cause fires so I only use mine when I am home and I unplug them when I go to bed. I know what you are talking about the fish smell. My husband will cook fish a lot too. It is hard to get out. You might try charcoal or dryer sheets. My husband is a nurse @ our local hospital and they hang dryer sheets up in the rooms on the ICU floor. It does work. Also most grocery stores have these scented container you can get and set in the rooms. You peal the seal away put the lid back on and they last for about 2 months they are usually on the aisle along with the fresheners.

You can also boil cinnamon in a pot, 2 cups water 1 tsp. cinnamon. Then simmer. You can do this while cooking fish. You can use spray products but be sure it says NEUTRALIZER.
